Incident at Jalan Bukit Tengah, BUKIT MERTAJAM

Penang police arrested a 51-year-old trailer driver after his container fell and caused the death of a woman at a busy intersection on Jalan Bukit Tengah on November 13.

Driver Held for Investigation

ACP Helmi Aris, Seberang Perai Tengah’s police chief, confirmed that officers detained the driver for further investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Drug and Alcohol Test Results

Authorities tested the driver for alcohol and drugs, but both returned negative results. However, they plan to seek a remand for the driver at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate Court on Thursday.

Witnesses Urged to Assist

The Victim’s Tragic Fate

The incident occurred when 21-year-old Lee Zi Rou was driving her Perodua Bezza to work. The falling container caused significant damage to several vehicles, including a Honda Jazz driven by Tan Chou Theng, 25, who sustained serious injuries.

How the Trailer Lost Control

At around 9:30 AM, five cars and a lorry had stopped at the traffic light on Jalan Kebun Sirih. The trailer, coming from Jalan Bukit Tengah, suddenly turned left. It lost control, causing the container to fall and crush two cars. The collision pushed these vehicles into three other cars and a lorry.
